KLCC Park
KLCC Park

Want to know where to stay in KL for a view of the world famous Petronas Towers? Kuala Lumpur City Centre (or KLCC for short) of course! Located right by Bukit Bintang (the city’s most popular area for tourists to stay), KLCC is the best place to stay in KL for those travellers wanting a great central location in close proximity to a good range of attractions, restaurants and shops.

KLCC is one of the best places to stay in KL if you’re looking for the very best luxurious hotels KL has to offer. Here you will find first class hotels, a sophisticated type of nightlife and upscale restaurants and shopping malls such as the Suria KLCC mall.

However, KLCC is not the best location to stay in Kuala Lumpur for the budget traveller with its lack of budget options.

One of the highlights of staying in KLCC, apart from the stunning view of the Petronas Towers, is KLCC Park – KL’s answer to Central Park, albeit on a smaller scale. This beautiful green space is the perfect place to relax in the city, take a walk or jog and to watch the nightly light show called the Lake Symphony. If your are visiting KL with children, this is also a great place to visit with kids as there is a playground and public swimming pool here too.

Some other attractions in the area not to miss are the Traders Hotel Skybar for spectacular views of the Petronas Towers, Aquaria KLCC and the Petrosains Discovery Centre.

Bukit Bintang

Pavilion KL
Pavilion KL

Places to stay in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia don’t get much more popular than Bukit Bintang. This is the Kuala Lumpur best place to stay if you want to be where it’s all happening. Here, you will find all the city’s best shopping, entertainment and dining.

It’s perhaps the best district to stay in Kuala Lumpur as it’s a super convenient area, as with various Monorail and MRT stations, you’re never far from anything including KLCC which is right next door. It’s my personal best pick.

Bukit Bintang is the best place to stay in Kuala Lumpur for shopping. Shoppers will love the modern shopping malls here such as the large Pavillion mall as well as Sungai Wang Plaza and Berjaya Times Square.

For awesome street food, you must head to Jalan Alor – the city’s most famous hawker food street. As soon as the sun sets, this area comes alive with street food vendors serving some of the city’s best cheap eats. Be warned though, this area is super popular with tourists and locals alike.

what to do in KL at night - Jalan Alor night food court
Jalan Alor Food Street

For those that love the night life, Bukit Bintang is where its at! Stop by Changkat Pub Street – KLs most famous pub and restaurant street. Here, there are stacks of bars, pubs and restaurants in pre-war colonial houses. Jalan Mesui Street is also a great option for those that prefer a more casual vibe.

There is a great range of hotels to stay in Kuala Lumpur in the Bukit Bintang area. Whether you’re on a tight budget or want to stay in luxury, there are some great hostels and hotels here.

When it comes to what area to stay in Kuala Lumpur where it’s all action – Bukit Bintang is the place to be. Bukit Bintang would definitely be my recommendation for the best place to stay in Kuala Lumpur for tourist travellers.

Bukit Bintang Summary

Pros

  • Shopping district
  • Jalan Alor – the city’s most famous hawker food street
  • Big range of accommodation no matter your budget
  • Changkat Pub Street – KL’s most famous pub and restaurant street
  • Easy to get around with public transport

Cons

PARKROYAL Collection Kuala Lumpur

PARKROYAL Collection Kuala Lumpur pool

Conveniently located at the heart of the city and surrounded by shopping opportunities, the 5-star PARKROYAL Collection KL is within walking distance of Kuala Lumpur’s retail, business, and entertainment districts. The most notable is the Berjaya Times Square which is basically opposite the property. MRT and monorail stations are just a few minutes walk away.

Its elegant rooms and suites include free WiFi, smart TVs, eco-friendly toiletries, bathrobes, tea and coffee making facilities and safes. Suites also have living areas. Many rooms have city views. The soundproofing could be better, though and the rooms lack storage areas.

Notable facilities of the hotel include a great pool with a cafe and bar right next to it, a gym, spa, business centre and multiple eating options.

Chinatown KL

Dive Into Malaysia at Chinatown KL
Exploring Petaling Street Market in Chinatown, KL.

One of the oldest and cheapest Kuala Lumpur places to stay is Chinatown. Chinatown is where you will find the majority of backpacker-style accommodation as well as some of the city’s best and cheapest street food.

Travellers love exploring the tiny little alleyways, admiring beautiful old temples such as the Chinese Sin Sze Si Ya temple and the Sri Mahamariamman Hindu shrine as well as simply observing the locals going about their day-to-day life.

The main tourist area in Chinatown is Jalan Petaling. Here you will find plenty of souvenirs and even great street food. For more upmarket shopping, try the Central Market.

If you’re not into the backpacker scene or prefer more midrange to upmarket accommodation, Chinatown is not the place for you. However, for those looking for cheap places to stay in Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown is worth considering.

Chinatown Summary

Pros

  • Great value budget accommodation
  • Good range of cheap street food
  • Cheap souvenirs

Cons

  • Limited option for travellers wanting midrange to upmarket accommodation.

Best For…
People wanting a good range of budget accommodation, plenty of cheap street food and bargain priced souvenirs.

You will be very comfortable in your air-conditioned room which includes ensuite bathroom, flat-screen television and personal toiletries. There are three different room options which are superior twin room, superior double room and family room for those travelling with children. Unfortunately, cleanliness can be a problem and service lacklustre.

Extra features of the hotel include luggage storing facility, 24 hour front desk and currency exchange for your convenience. This is an ideal hotel for being close to all the sights that KL has to offer.

KL Sentral

Entry to KL Sentral
Entry to KL Sentral

For those travellers that are using KL as a base for lots of day trips outside the city centre, a good place to stay in Kuala Lumpur is KL Sentral, as it’s where the KL Sentral Train Station is located. KL Sentral Train Station is the city’s main transportation hub where all the city’s public transport links such as the MRT lines, LRT trains, monorail and the airport KLIA Express Train.

There are a few good attractions worth visiting in the KL Sentral area including the Perdana Botanical Gardens, KL Bird Park, KL Butterfly Park and the National Museum where you can learn about KL’s history. For those that love to shop be sure to check out NU Sentral Mall which has many dining options as well as a cinema. And for the foodies, head on down to Brickfields, KL’s Little India, where you can try some amazing Indian street food.

Lake Gardens KL
Lake Gardens

In terms of a hotel to stay in KL Sentral, KL Sentral doesn’t have a good range of budget hotels with accommodation mainly being high-end hotels. So if you’re looking for a cheap place to stay in KL, best to stay elsewhere.

KL Sentral Summary

Pros

  • Close by KL Sentral Train Station, the city’s main transportation hub

Cons

  • Not the easiest area to walk around by foot
  • Not the most convenient area for exploring the main KL attractions
  • Limited budget accommodation options

Best For…
People wanting an easy base to explore other parts of Malaysia.

Best Place To Stay Around KL Sentral

Below are our choices for the best hotel around KL Sentral.

Hilton Kuala Lumpur

The Hilton Kuala Lumpur is in a great location, right across the road from the National Museum, in the heart of the KL Sentral area. Being just a 2 minute walk from KL Sentral you can easily explore the city and make the hotel your base while you are visiting KL.

You will enjoy your luxurious room which is fitted with a flat-screen television and marble ensuite bathroom featuring a rain shower. As you would expect in a Hilton, there are many room options including executive suites, king suites, lifestyle rooms and even a grand executive suite.

There is an amazing freeform swimming pool and ten different dining options including five restaurants, cafes and bars. Everything we have come to expect from Hilton hotels.

Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur

It’s not hard to see why the Le Meridien is a popular choice for many travellers to KL, with its close proximity to various shopping centres, the Golden Triangle City Centre and just 130 metres to KL Central Station which makes it a natural choice for tourists to base themselves.

In your room, you will find lovely large windows which make the most out of your view, a satellite television, safe and bathroom. It’s very comfortable. If you want to upgrade your room, you can choose the Club Meridien option which gives you access to the lounge and extra services.

The hotel offers extra services such as 24 hour concierge, luggage storage, currency exchange and a variety of eating options including four restaurants to choose from. A favourite is, of course, the outdoor swimming pool and the views of the city and Lake Gardens. You can see why this hotel is a firm favourite for many travellers.

The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur Autograph Collection

If you love colonial style modern accommodation in a great location then you need to check out The Majestic Hotel. It’s a little further from KL Sentral than the options above, but it is right by Kuala Lumpur station and the beautiful Lake Gardens. It’s also just a 5 minute walk from Merdeka Square.

The guestrooms are both spacious and grand and come with a spacious bathroom with separate tub and shower, flat-screen television for your viewing, and a personal safe for your peace of mind while you are in KL. Hotel Sentral

Looking for a more basic accommodation option but want a convenient location? Then you may be interested in Hotel Sentral which is located within walking distance to KL Central Railway Station and is just a few steps away from Brickfields. This hotel is in a great spot for exploring KL.

Each room is air-conditioned with a flat-screen television, ensuite bathroom as well as coffee and tea facilities. Some of the room options include twin, double as well as deluxe options. Unfortunately, the rooms are not always cleaned effectively, and there are many unhappy reviews about cleanliness levels.

The hotel has a restaurant for your dining needs as well as a lounge for you to enjoy your favourite cocktail while relaxing after all that sightseeing. The hotel is an affordable option for many people, but you do get what you pay for and the hotel could use with some renovating.

Chow Kit

Chow Kit is not generally the best location to stay in KL for tourists as it is primarily a large residential area. However, if you’re looking for cheap hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and a range of great cheap eats, it’s worth considering. It’s not far from KLCC.

One of the highlights of Chow Kit is the Bazaar Baru Chow Kit. This is the city’s largest fresh market which is frequented by locals and worth checking out. The area also has plenty of great local restaurants and Southeast Asia’s largest Sikh temple.

When it comes to which hotel to stay in KL, Chow Kit accommodation options are limited to budget hotels and better suited to travellers who like to stay in a more local area and experience local city life.

The area is serviced by monorail and LRT and so you can easily get around to other Kl attractions.

Chow Kit Summary

Pros

  • Good choice of budget accommodation
  • Plenty of authentic local food

Cons

  • Lack of popular landmarks
  • The streets by the Bazaar Baru Chow Kit Market are a red light district after dark and best avoided

Bangsar South/Mid Valley

Bangsar

When it comes to where to stay in Kuala Lumpur with family or for travellers having an extended stay in KL, Bangsar South is a good option. Bangsar South is a trendy residential area within close proximity to plenty of great restaurants and shops.  Here, you will find plenty of modern apartment buildings, great restaurants and shopping malls.

Bangsar South is recommended as a great choice for the best place to stay in Kuala Lumpur for families as there are plenty of fully self-contained apartments here to choose from. Also, given the location is a little out of the city centre, accommodation prices are very reasonable compared to what you’d expect to pay for a similar choice in the city centre.

For the area’s best selection of restaurants, cafes and bars head on down to the streets of Jalan Telawi and Lorong Maarof. For shopping, there is the huge Mid Valley Megamall.

With two LRT rail stations, it’s also fairly easy to get from Bangsar South / Mid Valley into the central area of KL and other attractions.

When it comes to Kuala Lumpur areas to stay for those wanting more space or on an extended stay, Bangsar South/Mid Valley is worth considering.
