While some people only consider visiting Langkawi because of its pristine beaches, this beautiful archipelago has a lot more to offer.

Nestled just off the coast in Penang, Malaysia, it’s a fantastic place to go to if you want to experience island life. Apart from its beaches, it’s also blessed with breathtaking sceneries, magical rainforests, waterfalls, and vibrant local culture.

But before you get to enjoy Langkawi, you need to get there!

If you’re looking at heading to Langkawi from Alor Setar or vice versa, then you’re in luck!  Below, I describe exactly how to go to Langkawi from Alor Setar whether you are looking for a flight, Alor Setar – Langkawi or wanting to take the Alor Setar – Langkawi ferry. This guide will provide details for departure points, where you arrive in Langkawi as well as details on both the plane and ferry Alor Setar to Langkawi schedule and ticket prices.

The distance between the two places is 60.3 kilometres. The approximate travel time via ferry is 1 hour and 30 minutes (plus an additional 1-hour transfer.) On the other hand, travel time via plane is 3 hours.

BEST OPTION: Alor Setar to Langkawi Ferry

Travelling by ferry from the Alor Setar jetty to Langkawi is the best option as it is faster and cheaper than flying via plane.

Option 1: Ferry – Alor Setar to Langkawi

One of the quickest (and more budget-friendly ways) to get to your destination is to travel via ferry from Alor Setar to Langkawi.

From the main city centre, take the bus to Kuala Kedah.  Buses leave on an hourly basis, with the travel time being approximately 20 minutes.  The bus fare is RM2.

Once arriving in Kuala Kedah’s port, you can purchase tickets for the ferry to Langkawi from Alor Setar, but I suggest you book online in advance to avoid the long queues and hassle. The fare is around RM 36 – RM 38.

The ferry – Alor Setar – Langkawi travel time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and ferries sail at least 4 times daily.

Once arriving in Langkawi, Kuah, the district capital, is just 3.2 kilometres from the port, and a quick 3-minute ride via taxi.   Other popular Langkawi beaches are just a short ride away also

Option 2: Alor Setar to Langkawi Flight

Another alternative if you don’t want to take the ferry is to fly via plane from Alor Setar to Langkawi.

Airline carriers like Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Firefly, and Batik Air offer flights from Alor Setar to Langkawi Airport. One way fares will range anywhere between RM 310 – RM 1100, depending on the airline and season.

Just note that there are no direct flights from Alor Setar to Langkawi. The fastest flight can take up to 3 hours including a stopover.

If you’re heading to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur, take the train at KL Sentral Station to Terminal Skypark Komuter Station. Travel time is 30 minutes (RM 3 – RM 11).

From Terminal Skypark Komuter Station, head to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (formerly Subang Airport) and take a direct plane to Langkawi.  Travel time by plane is 1 hour and 15 minutes and will cost around RM 140-RM 450, depending on the promos and season.

Langkawi to Alor Setar

In terms of how to get from Langkawi to Alor Setar, all you need to do is to take the above transportation options in reverse.

To get to your destination, you can either take the ferry or fly via plane.

The cheapest and fastest way to get to your destination is to travel via ferry. From Kuah, the Langkawi port is a quick drive via taxi. Travel time via ferry is 1 hour and 30 minutes, and tickets cost around 48 – RM 52. Ferries sail at least 4 times daily.

Alternatively, if you’re after a flight from Langkawi to Alor Setar, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Firefly, and Batik Air are the airlines that offer flights to and from these destinations.  Flights cost around RM 150 – RM 550, depending on the promos and season and the flight time is approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes, which includes a stop over as there is no direct Langkawi to Alor Setar flight.

Once you arrive at the Alor Setar airport, you can take a taxi to Alor Setar (approximately 13 minutes) and will cost 22 – RM 28.
