Ipoh is the capital city of the state of Perak in Malaysia’s north west, just a few hours by car from Penang and Kuala Lumpur. While Ipoh is one of the less explored cities of Malaysia, it is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. The city has gorgeous scenery, a beautiful Old Town with fun street art, as well as some of the best food in Malaysia.
Ipoh was once a small village, but thanks to the discovery of huge deposits of tin in the 1880s, it soon became one of Malaysia’s biggest cities. Today, it is Malaysia’s third largest city and, thanks to it recent efforts to conserve its gorgeous British colonial architecture, has rapidly become a popular tourist destination.
As well as its gorgeous old town, it’s also well known for its local natural attractions such as the surrounding limestone hills which feature various caves and Buddhist temples.
Located 180 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur and 120 kilometres southeast of Penang, the city of Ipoh is easy to reach by car, bus and train. Public transport leaves frequently from Penang, Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands as well as other places in Malaysia.
