Simply Enak Penang and Kuala Lumpur half-day food tours.
Malaysia is famous for its food, and there’s no better way to discover some of its best food, as well as the history and culture of Malaysia, than on a food tour.
Simply Enak food tours take you to attractions and multiple food vendors to eat the local food at great local establishments while sharing the history and culture of Malaysia as you go.
It can be surprising when you’ve never done a food tour before, how much food can help tell the history of a place and the influences on it. This is especially the case in Malaysia where the three main cultural groups – Malay, Chinese and Indian – show their history through their food.
I highly recommend you fit at least one food tour into your trip to Malaysia. Ideally, I recommend you do this at the start of your trip as you’ll appreciate the rest of your time here more when you know more about the food and culture.
To make that extra easy, here’s all the information you need about the awesome Simply Enak food tours as well as a discount code to make your experience even better and more affordable.
I also share videos of the Eat Drink George Town tour in Penang and Kuala Lumpur Street Food tour I recently went on. They were sooooo good! I’m still drooling thinking about the food I ate. Watching this will help illustrate all the different things you can experience on a fabulous food tour with Simply Enak.

Simply Enak Kuala Lumpur Food Tours
There are three food tours in Kuala Lumpur to pick from.
Flavours Of Malaysia (Off The Beaten Track)
This four hour tour runs in both the morning and the afternoon/early evening and concentrates on exploring one of the largest wet markets in KL at Chow Kit. Chow Kit is located in a central part of Kuala Lumpur but is off the radar of most tourists.
It’s an authentic local market and you’ll explore and taste along the way while learning about the main ingredients used in Malaysian kitchens whether the occupants are making Malay, Chinese or Indian food.
You’ll taste food from these three cultures and learn the stories behind them. On this tour, you’ll also learn about KL’s Indonesian immigrants and taste some of their dishes while comparing these dishes with the local ones.
In addition to this, you’ll also check out the pre-war architecture of the buildings along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

Secrets Of KL – Nightlife, Street Art And Cocktails
This four hour tour in the early evening concentrates on the nightlife of KL including night markets, cocktails and some cool street art. While the last tour focused on more traditional aspects of KL, this one is more about modern aspects and where this city is heading, particularly in regards to its nightlife and how it’s combining old with new.
The tour starts with a local cocktail or craft beer before exploring the alleys and train stations’ murals and street art. You’ll eat dinner at a local food stall and visit speakeasies.
Throughout it all, you’ll hear about how young business owners are changing Kuala Lumpur, especially around Petaling Street. You’ll learn about how old brothels are turning into trendy bars and how night vices have shaped Kuala Lumpur. By the time this tour finishes, you’ll know a lot about Kuala Lumpur’s history and culture.
Food includes snacks, clay pot chicken rice and rendang, among other things. This tour is for adults 21+ only.

Kuala Lumpur Street Food
This can be a great first tour of Kuala Lumpur as you are introduced to Malaysian culture, history and food via its famous street food in the heritage heart of Kuala Lumpur. It’s an especially family friendly tour and lasts 3.5 hours in the morning.
We did this tour with our kids aged 6, 11 and 12 at the time, and it worked very well.
The tour starts at Pasar Seni station and snakes its way around Chinatown while you learn about the history and cultural influences that make Kuala Lumpur and its food what it is today. You’ll visit local tradespeople, shops and street food vendors while seeing the local Malaysian daily life and, of course, eating the most delicious food and drinks.
You’ll watch handmade steam buns being made and taste a crazy amount of food and drinks such as Indian rotis, laksa, char kway teow, teh tarik (the local tea) and more. If you haven’t tried the infamous durian before, you’ll also get the chance with some durian puffs.
Additionally, you’ll learn about traditional Chinese medicine and how herbs can be used to heal.
You usually get to taste around 18 types of food and drink! The exact number depends on the group.
We especially enjoyed watching local vendors make food the traditional way while learning about their stories (and being able to ask questions).
Simply Enak also donates RM10 for every adult who takes part in this tour to the Pit Stop Community Cafe who serve homeless people in Kuala Lumpur.

Simply Enak Penang Food Tours
If you are heading to Penang, you have two Simply Enak food tour options here to consider.
Eat Drink George Town
This four hour early evening tour is the perfect way to explore Penang’s best food along with a local cocktail. You’ll explore the heritage area of George Town, the capital of Penang, by foot while hearing stories about Penang’s past and why there is such a delicious fusion of foods today here.
You’ll taste up to 11 types of food and drinks from hawker stalls and restaurants while you learn their stories. You’ll also visit the Clan Jetty where Chinese people built stilt houses over the water in the 19th century to avoid paying tax and eat one of the fabulous char kway teow (noodle dish) that Penang is famous for.
Other food can include laksa, Indian rotis, egg tarts and teh tarik (pulled tea – Malaysia’s popular local tea drink). I learned how to pull the tea myself 🙂 You’ll see how the streets of George Town change as the sun sets. It’s a beautiful time of day to explore here.
The tour finishes at a cocktail bar where you’ll have a locally inspired cocktail. This tour is for adults 21+ only.

You’ll enjoy Penang’s best street food with some great dishes across Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines such as roti canai, Penang laksa, nasi lemak and much more and learn what is unique about the food in Penang and why.
There is a lot to learn on this tour and you’ll discuss Penang’s secret societies and the role they played in Penang. You’ll visit Penang’s unique and engaging street art and see the Clan Houses that played a role in Chinese immigration to Penang (as well as tasting the dishes these immigrants influenced of course).
